This week we’ll explore the wonderful world of PLANTS! Have you ever wondered why plants are green? Why are leaves on trees green? There are all kinds of plants that grow all over the world, and most of them are green. WHY?
Plants use the process of photosynthesis to make their own food! They have specialized areas of their cells called chloroplasts where photosynthesis takes place. These areas reflect green rays of light, which is why plants look green to our eyes.
Through a chemical reaction inside the chloroplasts, plants turn sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen. This chemical reaction is what we call photosynthesis!
On another note, think of the air we breathe. Humans and animals need oxygen to breathe to survive. Plants make this! And the air we breathe out of our lungs when we exhale is carbon dioxide, which plants need, as well. We are connected to plants in this cycle of breathing in and out!
