Field of Ferns

Let’s go swimming
Not in a lake or a pool
Let’s go swimming in a field of ferns

You know ferns
They’re the plants that look like feathers
They grow big and wide, but not very tall

Do you see them?
There’s a field of ferns, just there!
Let’s go swimming in this field of ferns

Let’s look for the bugs that live with them
Let’s look for their spores glued under their leaves
Let’s smell the dirt and leaves and grass around them

Maybe the ferns will tell us stories from long ago
Maybe they’ll tell us about their ancestors
That were around when dinosaurs roamed!
Let’s listen to the field of ferns

The ferns rustle in the breeze
And brush against me
They fold and sway and dance with the trees

I’m glad we went swimming in the field of ferns
We learned so much and now in turn
The ferns are now friends and I want to keep them safe
So I’ll work hard and teach others about this giant fern lake
