Roots

Do you see me?

>

I poke out my fingers when I’m a mangrove

I lift up my knees as a cypress

>

I am stories of ancestors before you

I a myths and legends from lands and people long gone

>

Do you see me?

>

Sometimes I am a carrot or a beet

Sometimes fungus is my coworker

>

Do you see me?

>

I’m the eyes you got from mom

I’m the city where you were born

I’m the fibers that send water up to the sunflower

I’m the reason why islands stay together

I am roots

>

I am the roots you have found

Forever intertwined with many others

Forever connecting sisters and brothers

As in our blood, they are in the ground
