There are turtles in these woods!

These little turtles live in the ground and burrow!
They have shells and claws just like any turtle
But they have a lot more obstacles to hurdle
They can’t always burrow wherever they want
Humans take their trees and mow their lawns
To make spaces for our homes, we take theirs!
We leave them homeless, that doesn’t seem fair!
I’m afraid to tell you, but these turtles aren’t turtles at all
They’re truly called tortoises, and they’re not that small
They are called Gopher tortoises and they live in these woods
These trees and sand and dirt are their neighborhood!
